Loving Your Body: Navigating the Complex terrain of Body Image

Let’s talk about body image.

What does body image mean to you?

The definition of body image is the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception.

It encompasses how you feel about your body and what you believe about your body. It is also the perception you feel others may have about your body and guides any behavior you may plan to take because of your body.

It’s important to note what body image is NOT:

It is not:

  • Loving every single aspect of your body- toxic positivity – no thanks!
  • Worshipping stretch marks or your tummy rolls – you don’t have to love everything about your body!
  • Feeling confident because of your body- keep reading!

So what about a positive body image?

A positive body image means feeling self assured in yourself regardless of your body size.

Part of what makes a positive body image so hard to obtain is that our body image can be influenced by various factors, including societal ideals, cultural norms, personal experiences, and interactions with others.

The media, with its very narrow definition of beauty perpetuates unrealistic ideals that can leave many feeling inadequate and unworthy. From magazine covers to social media influencers, the message is clear: perfection is the ultimate goal.

So what’s an average girl to do?

Newsflash! We don’t have to buy into allowing ourselves and our inherent worth to be dependent on whatever body size or shape is fashionable at the time. We can recognize that beauty comes in all forms. Let’s practice honoring the body we inhabit, regardless of its size or shape and reframe our mindset to focus on what our bodies can do rather than how they look!

We only think that we would have a better body image IF our body was different, but that is some BS diet culture that has been sold to us!

In fact, body image has very little do with the body itself! And if you have ever lost weight, you probably found out that body image can be a moving target.

Our bodies are incredible vessels capable of amazing feats, from creating art to giving birth to hugging our loved ones. When we shift our focus from appearance to functionality, we begin to appreciate our bodies for the miracles they are.

One of my favorite reminders to my clients is that their body is the least interesting thing about them! The people who love them, love them because of who they are- not what they look like.

If you are ready to stop feeling “ewww” every time you look in a mirror – reach out and book a discovery call! Life is too short to hate your body and shame is a poor motivator so let’s practice body kindness instead!
